First sourdough.

I've made things with yeast for years, but this week was my first foray into the world of sourdough. Ta da!

My first loaves were misshapen and a bit overcooked, but the crust was crunchy, the middle was soft and chewy, and the flavour - yum!

I'm definitely a convert.

Jeremy found this picture book today whilst rearranging our (many, many) books. It's one I wrote and illustrated when I was in Prep, 22 years ago now. (!!) It's a cute keepsake from my childhood, and so I thought you might like to see it!

The puppies liked to play together but

after awhile they got into fights.

So their mother had to get them apart

So they obeyed her and played nicely.

I have plans for 2012.

In 2012 I will pay off my bank loan! This is special since once that's out of the way, I'll be able to start saving. I have so many things I want to do, and to be financially free is the beginning.

In 2012, I'm travelling. A seaside holiday in March, a trip to Kakadu in July. It's been nearly 20 years since I was last in Darwin, and I'm excited to see how much I remember, and how much it's changed since I was 8.

In 2012, I will keep gardening. In the three months since we've moved to a new house, we have done so much work on it, and it's only the beginning! Right now we've only got lettuces, but soon the broccoli will be ready to harvest, and the tomatoes, and the beans, and pumpkins and zucchinis. !!!

In 2012, I am going to see some music. PJ Harvey this month at MONA FOMA, and Justin Townes Earle in Melbourne in April. I hope there'll be more shows, and I hope I discover some new bands, too!

In 2012, I will spend time with my family and my friends. My mama and her sister are visiting in couple of weeks, and I can't wait to see them. I'll make time for coffee dates, and for long phone/Skype conversations with friends further afield. I'll also take the time to remember and honour friends and family who are no longer here.

In 2012, I will cook and eat delicious food, in delicious company.

In 2012, I will keep driving and working towards getting my license.

In 2012, I will be kind and generous, thoughtful and considered, peaceful and joyful.

This afternoon I was poking around on the internet and came across some photos of my parents that I'd never seen before.

They were taken before they married, when they were at university together. It's always weird to think of my parents having lives before my brothers and I came along, so it was wonderful to catch a glimpse of their former selves. My mother looks so cute with her perm, and I love the way she's looking back at the photographer. The man next to my father with the fantastic handlebar moustache would be best man at my parents' wedding a couple of years later, and he and my parents are still close friends today.

I'm going to print these pictures and stick them up, I reckon!

Today we went up to Mt Field National Park. We had intended to drive to Lake Dobson and walk to the Tarn Shelf, but it was snowing heavily and the road was slushy and boggy. Oliver was worried his little car wouldn't make it, so in the end we parked by the side of the road and walked.

It was wonderful! Though cold and snowy, we were rugged up, and tt was quiet and peaceful, with only the wind blowing through the treetops and the occasional car. We didn't make it to Lake Dobson, but we have plans to go back soon with a 4WD - and a boogie board for sledding!

Today I set out to make apricot jam and got five stitches and a tetanus shot instead. Be careful with knives, everybody!

It's no secret that I'm missing my sweetheart like crazy at the moment. For those of you who've just tuned in, my boyfriend is currently in the middle of the Bass Strait, on a yacht that has spent the past two weeks sailing down the east coast from Sydney.

I hope to have him home safely by the weekend, but for now I've been amusing myself with the (very many) photos I have of him making stupid faces. I hope you'll let me indulge my loneliness for a minute or two by sharing them with you?

And, lastly, a nice one, to prove to you (and reassure my parents that their grandchildren will not be terrifyingly ugly) that he really is as handsome as I say he is..

This was the most blissful part of my summer holidays - floating in the water on my back without a care in the world. I need to do that more often! This year I am going to make an effort to slow my life down a bit and try to find more of those carefree moments.

My beloved Jeremy is absent at the moment, sailing down the mainland east coast. He's been gone a week and has only made it as far from Sydney as Ulladulla - apparently the winds are blowing in the wrong direction - so he probably won't be home for a couple of weeks. He is having a great time, and is enjoying not having to wash.

His beard has grown out of control, and he looks like a real castaway! This is what it looked like 2 weeks ago when we were on holiday; I'm really looking forward to seeing how it looks in two or three weeks time!

I've been so worked off my feet lately that it feels like I haven't had time to breathe. I've just come off a 14-days-straight working week (which sometimes happens when you have two jobs) and now I'm on holidays for two weeks.

What's new with you? How was your Christmas? Mine was lovely - we went up to the north-west for a few days to spend time with Jem's family, and ate ourselves silly, and drank a fair bit of delicious home-made wine and walnut liqueur. We went on a trip to Stanley, and got snowed on at Cradle Mountain. Only in Tasmania.

Bella gave us a bit of a scare the day before Christmas Eve, when an undiscovered abscess on her tail burst and she started bleeding everywhere at 10pm. We rushed her to the hospital, where there was a vet on call, and she stayed overnight and had surgery the next day. We picked her up and took her up to Forth for Christmas. Meeting your boyfriend's extended family for the first time is frightening, so I was glad she was there to take some of the attention away from me! She's fine now, though her tail is shaved, and she looks a bit silly. I'm so glad she's all right and that it wasn't more serious. Since then we've not let her outside much, and she's not really enjoying being a house-cat, but better a grumpy cat than an injured one!

I haven't taken any photos since Christmas, and haven't had time to get those developed. Once I get out of my pyjamas I'll drop those off and then I'll have something to share at last! For now, here's some pictures from my mobile.

Dear Liz,

Happy new year! I just wanted to write you a little note and give you some encouragement - I know you've been feeling a bit down lately. Here goes!

You're doing so well. You’re healthy in body and mind for the first time in years. You have a job that you love (and do you know how rare that is?), and you might not be rich but you have everything you need. You have an awesome (if tiny) house with a fantastic view in the city that you love.

You have a beautiful, fluffy, grumpy cat. You're so proud of your family and they are so proud of you. You have wonderful, clever, creative friends you can call on at any time of the day or night if you need them.

You have a handsome partner who shares your values and wants the same things from life as you do. Sure, he can be a pain in the bum at times but you’re madly in love with him anyway. And guess what, Liz? He’s madly in love with you, too. How about that?

Don’t worry about the past - you can’t change that. Don’t worry about the future - there’s not much you can do about that, either. Keep working at being content with where you are, what you have, right now, and don’t stress about the rest. I know it’s hard, but you can do it!

And don’t beat yourself up if you find yourself stressing about your debts or your lack of a university degree or that damn biological clock that won’t shut up. You’ll be fine. Just take some deep breaths, have a cup of tea, and let it out and let it go.

You are awesome. You can do it!

Last weekend was my 26th birthday. Gosh, I'm getting old! I had some friends round for lunch, and we ate and ate and ate.

I didn't manage to get any good pictures of my guests, but here's the cake..

It's Elizabeth David's chocolate almond torte. I make it every year and it's never failed me!

To make it, you do this:

Preheat the oven to 375F (190C), and line a 20cm springform tin with baking paper.

Separate 4 room-temperature eggs, with the yolks in one bowl and the whites in another.

Melt 200g dark chocolate (the best you can get, and at least 70% cocoa solids) with 150g chopped unsalted butter in a stainless steel bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat and cool.

Beat the egg yolks and 100g caster sugar until pale and thick. Beat in the melted chocolate/butter mixture and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Fold in 100g blanched almond meal.

In a clean, dry bowl, whisk the egg whites until foamy. Add 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (I usually omit this, it's not really necessary) and continue whisking until soft peaks form. Sprinkle in 50g caster sugar and whisk until stiff peaks form. Fold about 1/4 of the whites into the chocolate batter to lighten it. Quickly fold in the rest of the whites and mix only until just incorporated.

Pour the batter into the pan and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes or until ready. Remove and cool. The cake will rise during baking but falls during cooling, leaving a crisp and cracked crust. Once cool, run a spatula around the inside of the pan before undoing the tin. Dust with icing sugar and serve with strawberries and thick double cream.

Sunday/Monday afternoon outings have become a bit of a Thing in my household. Today we braved the freezing wind and icy rain and ventured to Kingston beach. Luckily, we were rewarded with sunshine and rainbows!

I'm seriously keen to move down there now - housing is super-cheap, and getting to live next to such a pretty beach would be wonderful! The only snag would be the commute into town every day... we'll see. It's tempting!

Last night, Lisa, Debby and I frocked up and went to the Casino. The plan was to float about looking enigmatic and find men to buy us drinks but, tragically, everyone there was too busy gambling or drinking or fighting out the front to notice three girls in evening gowns and furs.

A bit dejected, we explored - watching the card players and the roulette wheel, wandering down deserted hallways and into the band room. We found the plexiglass elevator and rode up and down a couple of times. There was a group of people at the bar laughing at us, and they called us over.

"Hey!" the woman said, "I love your outfits! You girls are all so cute! I love how you're all dressed so differently, like you've each got your own style! I love how individual you look! Are you fashion students?"

No, we explained. We're all a bit sad and heartbroken and decided to dress up and come out here to find men to buy us drinks, but they're all too busy gambling to notice us.

"OMG, I have to take your picture - I'm totally going to blog you! It's so cute that you're all heartbroken!"

So dutifully we posed, while her husband and friends watched from the sidelines. She took a great fancy to Lisa, and got her to stand by herself for one shot.

Her husband said, "You girls want to come with us? I'll buy you drinks, come on!"

So we did. Mission accomplished.

Oh, and the strangers who took our picture and bought us drinks? Tim "Rosso" Ross, his wife Michelle, and several members of Grinspoon. (gee, they've aged...) I can't wait to see if Lisa in her emerald-green dress shows up on the blog..

I've got a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, and a cheesy, crunchy, creamy, garlicky pasta-bake in the oven.

Today I picked up a sad, wilted bunch of rainbow chard and a cauliflower with a rotten brown spot out of the take-home-or-throw-away box at work. I roasted the cauliflower with some garlic (also from the box!), and sauteed finely chopped chard with bacon and butter. I cooked some spiral pasta and made a balsamella (bechamel) sauce. I put it all together in a baking dish with stacks of grated parmigiano cheese and crunchy panko breadcrumbs on top. Now it's in the oven emitting rays of deliciousness throughout my apartment.

Making balsamella is easy-peasy. I do it the way my mum showed me when I was little - melt 60g butter, add 60g plain flour, stir and cook until the flour doesn't taste "floury" anymore, sploosh in milk until it's the consistency you want it, and keep whisking all the while to ensure your sauce isn't lumpy. My mother uses an actual whisk but I use a fork. It's a bit lumpy, but I don't mind. I stirred in some salt, some black pepper, and some nutmeg too.

I'd have taken pictures to show you, but the batteries in my camera are dead. Next time!

Today's been a pretty awful day. Someone I loved very much is gone, and all day I've been in a daze, trying to make sense of it. I think I've come to the conclusion that it doesn't ever make sense, and that makes me angry, and hurt, and heartbroken.

The mountain can sometimes seem menacing, but today it gleamed in the early morning light and soothed me.

Quince crumble.

I poached a quince today and now my apartment smells of the fresh ginger and star anise that I simmered it with.

After the quince was cooked, I put it in a little baking dish with the ginger and star anise, some of the poaching liquid and scattered some sugar over the top. Then I made a crumble and dotted it over the top, and then I baked it.

To poach the quince:

(inspired by this post. If it wasn't for David Lebovitz I wouldn't have remembered the bag of star anise sitting in the pantry!)

Peel and core the quince. Put it in a small pot and just cover with water. Add whatever aromatics you like - I used star anise, a slice of lemon, and slices of fresh ginger. Add some sugar. Simmer until the quince is cooked. It took me about half a hour, but David says it can take up to two hours! Just check your quince and when it's ready, it's ready. Let it cool in the poaching liquid.

Set the oven to 190C (or 180C if you have a fan-forced oven) and make the crumble while the oven heats.

To make the crumble:

(my crumble was inspired by the recipe at the end of this post, but you can use whatever crumble you like best)

Rub 70g Nuttelex or similar into 75g plain flour. Mix in 40g large breadcrumbs (I used panko 'cause that's what I have), 40g brown sugar, some ground cinnamon and nutmeg, and a little splash of water to make it all come together nicely.

Now, put the quince into a little baking dish. Put in the star anise and ginger too, if you like. Scatter some sugar on the top. Put the crumble on the top in clumps until it's all covered over. Bake for about half an hour until the top is brown and crunchy.

You could eat this with icecream or cream or yoghurt or ricotta or cottage cheese or anything, really. I don't have any of those things so I ate it as it was, straight out of the dish.

Stuff 'em!

I got a bagful of green peppers from the "staff" box at work, and devised a recipe around stuff I already had in my pantry.

I cooked some brown rice and black-eyed peas, mixed that up with onion, garlic, salt, pepper, lemon, cumin, cinnamon and paprika. I chopped the tops off the peppers and stuffed the mixture inside, and put them in a baking dish. I made a quick tomato sauce (this one) and poured it over the top of the peppers, and sprinkled some nooch and breadcrumbs over the top, and stuck it in the oven for half an hour to bubble and brown.

It was pretty damn tasty. Yum!

My mother and father are heading off to Tanzania in early July to spend 12 months working in Bukoba for VSO! It's very exciting for them, as it's something that they've wanted to do for a very long time. I'm hoping for my mysterious benefactor to pull his/her finger out and fly me to Africa to visit them at some point but I doubt it will happen, somehow. I'll just have to live vicariously through their blogs - Mum's at Our year in Africa and Dad can be found at Bukoba Steve's Tanzania birding blog.

Needless to say, I am very, very proud of them both.

I took myself for a long, long walk along the beach the day after Pip and Andrew's wedding.

I'd never been to Swansea before and it was so, so nice to have the excuse of a wedding to have a seaside weekend away. (Thanks guys!!)

I love it! Gorgeous soft fluid jersey, with just a touch of that shoulder embellishment that's so hot right now. I bought it to wear with a specific outfit, but it's just as nice tucked into jeans. I bought a larger size so it skims my body nicely. What do you think?

I think I must be a cat magnet. In the past week I've had two feline visitors - a tabby tomcat and a little black girl kitten. The kitten ran away before I could get my camera, but the tomcat graciously posed for me, while my own Bella hid under the car, glowering.

Tonight I'm feeling very stunned and sad from hearing the news that Australian musician Rowland S. Howard passed away today after a long battle with liver cancer.

I'm really not qualified to speak of his career and achievements, because I only discovered his music this year, but his album Pop Crimes has been one of my most listened-to this year. You can read my friend Trevor's recent interview with him here, and there are some fantastic photos to be seen on this blog.

Truly a Melbourne icon, he'll be very much missed. xox

La Linea.

I was reminded today of the cute Italian cartoon La Linea. Drawn in the 70s by Osvaldo Cavandoli, it's a cartoon drawn in a single white line on a plain coloured background. The main character and the cartoonist interact, with the cartoonist drawing obstacles for the character to deal with. He is very emotional, and he sometimes gets very angry with the cartoonist, yelling and swearing at him in Milanese gibberish. I love the hand gestures he makes too, to me they are so Italian!

There are heaps of videos on YouTube, but I've included a couple for you to enjoy.

This one, Eroslinea, is very strange!

I'm in Hobart!

I have no internet at home so I'm spending hours at uni reading blogs and looking up recipes for my new-found veganism.

The hills are hilly, and I'm getting fit walking up the hill to my house every day.

It rained for three days straight over the weekend.

My friends Wagons played on Saturday night, so it was just like being in Melbourne.

I went to an art exhibition in Josh Pringle's garage.

I'm going to see Where The Wild Things Are tonight with my book group, and I'm going to wear my furry coat for the occasion.

I'm coming back to Melbourne briefly in a couple of weeks to finish things up at my old house, and eat greasy food and play trivia at the East.

I think that's all.

I remember being particularly proud of these photos, taken in 1999 in Western Australia, and I think they've stood the test of time. If anyone can help me identify them, that would be lovely! The only one I remember is the enamel orchid, the shiny bright purple one.

Yesterday, I forgot to write so I'm doing it now. Yesterday, Mum, Dad, Toby and I went to François Péron National Park. David stayed at caravan cos he was "too tired" (hah!) We had lunch looking over the Indian Ocean... the contrast between the red sand and the blue sea was beautiful...

At the Francois Peron Homestead, there was a very hot hot tub, and Mum and Toby went in it, they said it was lovely!!

Today we went to an old town near Greenough. It was very interesting. There was churches and a court house. Toby especially liked the courthouse. It was hot and humid today. We also went to Ellendale Pool, it was nice but a bit crowded. It would be nice to swim in on a hot day. There was a playground.

We went to Lucy's Beach , there was a funny looking scarecrow there. I took some photos of it and the waves 'exploding' through the rocks.

Yesterday, we left the caravan at Cocklebiddy and we went to the Eyre Bird Observatory. It is looked after by some people called Alex and Rob. Alex took me and mum and David and Toby for a walk down to the beach for a walk, and we found a Dolphin backbone. Mum and I went on the rope walk. Mum and Toby went on a long walk this morning. There are some swallows in the toilet.

We're staying in a roadhouse called Cocklebiddy. We went to the old Eucla telegraph station. There was a house that was nearly burried in sand. There was a huge sand mountin that Toby and David slid down. I saw 3 emus and lots of cockatoos. Tomorrow we are going to the Eyre Bird Observatory. I have to write more about Eucla... the whole town was burried in the sand and the sand dunes were very big. At a place we stopped there was a camel and a emu and a pig.

It was 1999, I was 14, and my family were travelling around Western Australia in a caravan.

I'm going to be posting photos that I took back then, accompanied by excerpts from the diary I kept.

The photos are of varying quality - taken on slide film 10 years ago, they've deteriorated somewhat, but that's OK! It just makes it more interesting!

I was inspired this morning by Anna to share with you some old photos, taken with my beloved Pentax K-1000 camera. It was the first camera I ever learnt to use, and originally belonged to my father, but he passed it down to me a couple of years ago.

I don't use it as often as I would like, because of the cost of getting film developed in a shop, but as soon as I'm settled in my new city and have some spare time and spare money, I'm going to invest in some basic darkroom equipment so I can develop my own black and white negatives at home.

These pictures are old, taken over the summer of 2007/08, (and was that really two years ago??) and I only got them developed fairly recently, so seeing them brought back memories of living in that house, and being in love with that guy, and that time we all went to the beach and saw a starfish! Photos are like that, though, right?

Over the past few days I've been gradually bidding my friends farewell, and last night I caught up with Jhana for beer and pizza. A lovely night, but all the beer made it difficult to get up at 4.30am for work today!

My dear friend Thao made me phở. The other day she presented me with a phở pack, with broth, raw sliced beef, rice noodles, bean shoots, herbs, chilli, spring onion, lime, soy sauce and instructions.

So today, I simmered the broth, dropped in the beef and noodles, then served it with all the garnishes.

Delicious, and just what I needed on this hot day!

With friends like Thao here in Melbourne, I'm seriously reconsidering my impending interstate move...

I've got a crate of books sitting on my front fence in inner-north Melbourne, free for anybody who walks past to have a rifle through and take what they'd like! There's kids books, history/classics texts, novels, political memoirs and a pocket-sized Italian/English dictionary. And lots more!

I'm moving in a week's time, and am trying to downsize.. any books that are left over will be going straight to an op shop!
